Our Buckwheat is hulled and is grown in the hilly region of Sikkim. Farmers work with our buying partner that assures them of a ready market for their produce, empowers them and gives better prices through fair-trade.
Among the minor cereals buckwheat is an important crop in feeding the mankind and animals to meet the ever- increasing demand of rapidly expanding population of North East India. It is an important crop of the mountain regions at elevations above 1400 m and infact in the higher Himalayas, up to 4500 m, this is the only crop which can be grown successfully.
Hulled buckwheat can be eaten on its own as a side, use it as a substitute for rice in risotto, as a base for a hearty salad, in a granola or energy bars. It can also be ground into flour and used to make various baked goods. Most of the buckwheat is ground into flour and used for making a variety of foods, including noodles in Japan and pancakes and breakfast cereals in the USA; Russians and eastern Europeans make a wide range of foods with buckwheat and as chicken dressing and in certain ethnic dishes. Infact we are experimenting with an energy bar made out of buckwheat.
One can easily replace wheat and rice with this cereal and is also healthier than the other 2 grains.
Buckwheat seeds are hulled and can be stored in an air tight container and have a shelf life of about 18 months.
Gluten Free
Did you know: On Hindu fasting days, since wheat or rice is prohibited, many fasting people in North India eat products made of buckwheat and buckwheat flour
